Baldur’s Gate 3′s much-anticipated physical release is on the horizon, marking a significant shift from its initial digital-only launch in August and September. The release date for the Japanese edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 is December 21 of this year, and it has sparked curiosity about whether it will include English voice lines alongside the Japanese localization. While the Japanese release had been previously confirmed, the recent announcement provided crucial details and a fresh trailer. Nevertheless, the question of whether players in other countries can expect a physical version remains unanswered.

Larian Studios’ wording suggests that the Japanese localization may be incorporated into existing copies of Baldur’s Gate 3. This implies that the differences between a digital copy purchased in the West and a physical copy acquired in Japan might be minimal, with the latter defaulting to Japanese. However, it’s important to note that this interpretation is speculative, and confirmation is needed before making any assumptions.

When Baldur’s Gate 3 made its debut on PC in August and on PS5 in September, it followed the trend of several new games opting for a digital-only release. Alan Wake 2 is another example of this approach, choosing digital distribution across all platforms. In the case of Baldur’s Gate 3, the decision wasn’t entirely surprising, considering the game’s unexpected success, which even caught its developers off guard. Notably, Xbox initially offered a relatively modest $5 million payout to include the game on Game Pass, an offer that Larian declined. Furthermore, the game skipped Xbox at launch due to complications related to the Series S.

We’ve reached out to Larian Studios to inquire about potential physical releases outside of Japan and will update this report if we receive a response. For now, gamers can experience Baldur’s Gate 3 by purchasing it digitally on PlayStation 5 or PC through platforms like Steam and GOG. The release on Xbox is expected sometime this year, but details regarding its format (digital-only or physical) and exact launch date remain uncertain.
